June 2009

June 20, 2009 : Kids' Civil War Camp at Cross Keys

The Rockingham area partners of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District will be hosting their 4th annual 'Civil War Kids Camp at Cross Keys' on June 20, 2009.  Prepare for a day filled with fun and learning as children are introduced to the life of a civil war soldier in the Shenandoah Valley!

Held at the historic Widow Pence Farm, camp begins with the "issuing of uniforms and equipment".  Student "soldiers" will be "commanded" by experienced reenactors who will spend the day giving them a glimpse into what the camp and military life was like in the 1860’s.

In addition, there will an array of activities including a tour of the Widow Pence House, an original log house that stood during the 1862 Battle of Cross Keys.  Here, "soldiers" can talk with the "families and civilians" who were dealing with their own struggles during this turbulent time in our nation's history.  We will conclude with a "reenactment" held on the actual land where the Battle of Cross Keys took place over 145 years ago!

Adults are welcome to "tag along" or are invited to go on a driving tour of the Cross Keys Battlefield and/or a walking tour of the quaint town of
Port Republic.
